Your logo is often the first impression a customer has of your business. Here is a practical checklist for choosing a mark that is memorable, versatile and built to last.
A logo is not just a picture. It is the visual shorthand for everything your business stands for, and it shows up everywhere: your storefront, website, invoices, social profiles and the side of your van. Choosing the right one is one of the most important early decisions you will make.
Start with your audience, not your taste
It is easy to pick the design you personally like best. A better question is: which design will your ideal customer trust? A law firm, a bakery and a skateboard shop all need very different visual languages, even if the owners share the same favourite colour.
Five qualities every strong logo shares
- Simple - it can be recognised at a glance and drawn from memory.
- Memorable - one distinctive idea beats five clever ones.
- Versatile - it works in one colour, on dark and light backgrounds, and as a tiny favicon.
- Appropriate - the style fits your industry and your customers.
- Timeless - it avoids trends that will look dated in two years.
Test it in the real world
Before you sign off, put your shortlisted concepts on a business card, a website header and a social media profile picture. Shrink them down to 32 pixels wide. Print them in black and white. The concept that survives all of these tests is usually the winner.
Ask for the right files
A finished logo should come with vector files (AI, EPS, SVG), high-resolution PNG and JPEG files, and colour plus grey-scale versions. Every Blueprint Logo Design package includes these, so you will never have to go back to a designer just to get a bigger file.
