Logo File Formats Explained: AI, EPS, SVG, PNG & JPEG

Blueprint Logo Design Team 4 min read

Received a folder full of logo files and not sure which one to use? Here is a plain-English guide to every format and when to use it.

When your logo is finished you will receive several file types. Each one has a job. Using the wrong format is the most common reason logos look blurry or have an ugly white box around them.

Vector files: AI, EPS, SVG and PDF

Vector files are built from mathematical shapes, so they can be scaled to any size - from a pen to a billboard - with no loss of quality. Send these to printers, sign makers and embroidery shops.

PNG

PNG files support transparent backgrounds, which makes them ideal for websites, presentations and placing your logo over photos.

JPEG

JPEG files are small and widely compatible but do not support transparency. Use them for email, documents and anywhere a solid background is fine.

Quick reference

  • Printing, signage, apparel: AI, EPS or PDF
  • Website and social media: SVG or PNG
  • Word documents and email: PNG or JPEG
  • Favicon or app icon: PNG (square, icon-only version)

Every Blueprint Logo Design package includes AI, EPS, PSD, PNG and JPEG files plus colour and grey-scale options, so you are covered for every use.
